P90X Update

Week #5 Day #2 which means Plyo X, which is as Tony Horton puts it "Is the mother of all P90X workouts". And he ain't joking, I seam to forget every week exactly how tough that work out is but I'm usually reminded about 10 minutes in.

So the question is how's it working, well the good news is I've lost about 5 lbs since starting, which when you factor in that I haven't been keeping a very strict diet and missed about 4 straight days of workouts while I was in Bristol (not to mention gorgeing myself on none to healthy but oh so delicious food) I guess you could say its going great. I have tightned up my diet the last few days, which is leaving my energy levels low, but I know its what I gotta do to shed the pounds.

Still running every morning as well, nearly 40 miles a week right now, got the QC Half Marathon in just about 5 weeks and I'm hoping to shatter my PR should be good no matter what. Still looking forward to some better weather in the near future...got spoiled for a couple days than back to 20's and 30's.

So long for now, more updates to follow.

Runners blog #11

Some non-runners will just never get the obsession with running, and I can't help explain it to them. It's hard to justify setting your alarm for 5 am so you can get up to go for a run in 34 degree weather, which you're excited about because its been in the teens and twenty's for way to long. It's nearly impossible to explain the over whelming urge you get, to go for a run when you drive by a park or in some scenic rural setting. I can't explain my attraction to running, heck I barely understand it sometimes myself, 2 years ago running was in the same category as going to the dentist, I knew it was good for me and I should do it but I just put it off anyway. But what I can say is that not only has running help make me a more physically fit person, I believe it has helped make me a more mentally and spiritually fit person as well. Running allows me time to think and process my thoughts, it also allows me to disconnect from everything else going on in my life for little while and reconnect with myself. Some people find this through other avenues mine just happens to be through running.

P90X Day #3

So today is day 3 of doing P90x for me and after doing chest & back on Monday and plyometrics (jump training) last night, I have to say I'm surprisingly felling pretty good, especially since I'm still doing my regular daily morning runs. The work outs are definitely intense and if you really push yourself you are gonna sweat! The great thing about these videos that I have already discovered is (and probably why they are such a huge hit) is that you get all the benefits of going to an expensive gym and hiring a personal trainer but in the comfort and privacy of your own home. Now I've never been one to shy away from the gym, in fact I enjoy the atmosphere personally, but not having to waste 20-30 minutes in travel time as well as waiting around for someone to finish up on the one machine you need in the whole gym is invaluable. Your motivated to push yourself from the instructor Tony Horton, his favorite line is "Do your best and forget the rest" and they show different variations to make the exercises easier or harder depending on skill level. Another nice point is most of the people who are with Tony on the video are normal looking people and many of them are not professional trainers, just regular folks that made it through their test groups and were selected to shoot the video's. In fact one guy on the plyometrics DVD has a prosthetic leg, yeah that's right a one legged man is doing jump training, its kinda hard to slack off when you look up at the screen and this guy is "Bringing It". Today is going to be Shoulders and Arms, which I'm excited about those are the glory muscles. More updates to come.

Runner's blog #10 - I refuse to wear tights

So its been quite awhile since my last entry, the weather has gotten cold, and stayed cold, but I have made a firm resolution that I will refuse to wear running tights. First off no one wants to see that mess, including myself and my dog Lucky whom runs the majority of the outside miles with me. Secondly tights should really only be worn by the super fit and those who may one day wear the term "Olympian" in there title.

So anyway, since completing my first marathon I have been in some what of a training limbo, no real goal or target to strive for but still really motivated to get out and run nearly every day. I guess I've found that my motivation has changed over the last 2 years, at first I needed a goal, something to shoot for to keep me getting up every day and getting my butt to the gym or get out on the road. Fighting an mma bout, running the Bix 7, half-marathon, and a full marathon were my goals, my motivation, and what pushed me when I didn't want to go after it anymore. Everyday had structure, run this many miles on this day, this week, this month. Get to the gym so many days a week, for weights, kick boxing, jiu-jitsu and sparring. Now my goal this spring was to run a second marathon and beat my previous time but I'm becoming unmotivated under the strict regiment of a training cycle, so I recently decided I'm not running then marathon in May. I'm still doing the QC half marathon and some other races, and I'm still running almost every day (24 out of 28 days in February), but I'm ditching the training schedule. I'm running when I want and how much I want, its more fun that way I've found. I still have a strict regiment, but I dictate the parameters daily instead of blindly following some training plan off the internet. I also recently started doing P90x, and man let me tell you its intense and no joke, but the best part is that it's only as intense and hard as you make it, so anyone of any fitness level could start out doing it. I'm starting on a journey to become super fit! But I promise NO TIGHTS!
